As of 2025, Ricky Ma remains recognized as one of the very few — and the first known individual — to have independently created a highly lifelike humanoid robot. This rare achievement establishes him as a pioneering Robotic Artist and Technologist, highlighting the unique power of self-driven creation within the field of robotic art.
A Dream
Biography: A multidisciplinary creator with roots in Hong Kong and citizenship in Canada, Ricky single-handedly built the internationally renowned humanoid robot Mark 1. His work has been widely featured by global media such as Thomson Reuters, BBC, CNN, and CTV, and exhibited in cities including Toronto, Moscow, and Hong Kong.
Ricky’s artistic practice is led by an art-first philosophy. He places particular emphasis on facial expressions and lifelike movements in his robots, exploring how authenticity in gesture and emotion can transform mechanical forms into artistic expression. His approach blends visual design, narrative storytelling, and interactive engineering, positioning robotics not merely as machines but as cultural vessels that embody meaning and dialogue.
Through his project MechaArt Nexus, Ricky extends this vision — using robotics as a medium that connects art, audience, and time. His work demonstrates how the future of art may transcend canvas and sculpture, emerging instead in forms that can perceive, express, and interact.
